VAT'S THE PROBLEM
Hospitality is one of the UK's biggest success stories. We create jobs, support local suppliers, bring people together and keep our high streets thriving. Yet the sector is under increasing pressure from rising costs, unfair business rates and one of the highest tax burdens in Europe.
That's why, from 1 July, the industry is coming together behind VAT's The Problem - a campaign calling for hospitality VAT to be reduced from 20% to 10%.
Many European countries, including France, Spain, Italy and Ireland, already recognise hospitality's value through lower VAT rates. The UK should do the same.
A fairer 10% VAT rate would help businesses invest, protect jobs, strengthen local communities and support long-term growth.
Because when hospitality businesses disappear, communities lose far more than places to eat, drink and stay — they lose connection, character and opportunity.
Led by Tom Kerridge and backed by businesses across the country, VAT's The Problem is a united call for change. 10% is fair for hospitality.
